A client once asked me, on the 14th tee at Cape Kidnappers, why nobody had mentioned his handicap all week. I told him I had stopped listening for it around day three. He looked almost relieved. That doesn\u2019t mean golf is incidental on these trips. It isn\u2019t. Tee times, slope ratings, signature holes all matter to the people who book a golf journey through New Zealand.<\/p>\n
Golf is not incidental on these trips; it\u2019s the planned purpose for several days. Sometimes is the very reason the itinerary exists at all, with tee times that get the same weight as flights. Some of Aroha Luxury New Zealand Tours\u2018 guests have spent decades building a private list of courses they want to play before they\u2019re done, and five new names in a fortnight is no small thing to them.<\/p>\n
Others are couples who took up the game together once the kids left home, and have quietly built a marriage around what is, essentially, a very long walk. A few, I suspect, book a golf tour partly because eighteen holes is a perfectly respectable reason to be unreachable for four hours. Whatever brought them to the game, nobody here is treating golf as background.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n<\/div>\nA links course on the edge of the Pacific plays differently when the wind is doing something to the dunes, though. It has nothing to do with strategy. Club selection becomes a conversation with the weather rather than the yardage book. By the third or fourth round, guests stop asking for the yardage and start asking which way the wind\u2019s blowing instead.<\/p>\n
Few places let a golfer move through such different terrain in a single trip, and the differences show up in how each course actually plays, not just how it looks.<\/p>\n
Twice the trouble, one address<\/h2>\n
Te Arai Links, on the coast north of Auckland, is really two trips in one. <\/p>\n
The South Course, shaped by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, gives you Pacific Ocean views on sixteen of its eighteen holes and a width off the tee that lets most handicaps enjoy themselves without losing a sleeve of balls. <\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n<\/div>\nThe North, designed a year later by Tom Doak, only touches the ocean directly on about a third of its holes, and spends the rest of its time getting strange and brilliant inland, through old pine country reshaped into dunes. <\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n<\/div>\nMembers will tell you the North plays four or five shots harder than the South. I tend to send first-timers to the South in the morning and save the North for when they\u2019ve had a coffee and a proper look at the wind.<\/p>\n
New Zealand\u2019s toughest test<\/h2>\n
A few days later, at The Kinloch Club on the northern shores of Lake Taup\u014d, the test changes completely. This is Jack Nicklaus\u2019s only \u2018Signature\u2019 design in New Zealand, a par-72 stretching to 7,365 yards from the back tees, with something close to 172 bunkers awaiting an errant or misjudged shot. <\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n<\/div>\nAt the grand opening in 2007, Nicklaus was asked \u201cwhat is the signature hole?\u201d He answered, \u201call of them\u201d. Most of our guests disagree and vote for the par-5 16th, which offers four genuinely different ways to play the second shot depending on how bold you\u2019re feeling that day.<\/p>\n

Cape Kidnappers poses a different challenge altogether. Designed by Tom Doak as his first New Zealand course, and still one of his most iconic designs set on a 6,000-acre working sheep station above Hawke\u2019s Bay, with fairways that run out along ridges 400 feet above the water before narrowing to almost nothing. <\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n<\/div>\nThe 15th is the hole everyone talks about afterwards, a par 5 that drops to a fairway just 40 yards wide between the cliff edge and a ravine. I\u2019ve watched grown adults lay up there out of pure self-preservation, and I don\u2019t blame a single one of them.<\/p>\n

In Queenstown, Jack\u2019s Point sits beneath the Remarkables, one of the only mountain ranges in the world that runs directly true north to south. John Darby\u2019s design built with as little disturbance to the original landscape as possible also runs along Lake Wakatipu, a stunning, glacier-carved alpine lake and the country\u2019s third-largest. <\/p>\n

The guide\u2019s actual job<\/h2>\n
A driver who only knows the roads turns a golf trip into logistics, but when your guide understands the rhythm of the game, they do something different. They can bring some wisdom to the discussion around which tee time avoids the worst of the wind, which clubhouse is worth staying in past the round. None of these nuances sit in an itinerary; rather, it comes from reading a group the way you would read a green.<\/p>\n
I have hosted plenty of low-scoring rounds I don\u2019t particularly remember. The ones that stay with me are the ones where humour and sightseeing are as important as the holes, and the clubhouse conversation afterwards ran longer than the golf had.<\/p>\n
That same guest had one more thing to say before we walked off the 14th. He admitted, quietly, that his official handicap had been generous by about six strokes for as long as he could remember. I told him that explained a few things. He asked me not to put that in writing!<\/p>\n
