Carducci, PhD, a professor of psychology and director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast in Bloomington.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since shyness and social awkwardness isn&#8217;t always obvious, it&#8217;s good to be especially careful not to say something unhelpful. The most socially aware people know better than to use specific language that makes a shy person feel uncomfortable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Socially aware people rarely say these thoughtless things to a shy person:<\/h2>\n<h3>1. &#8216;You\u2019re so quiet&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-default\"> <span class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yourtango.com\/sites\/default\/files\/image_blog\/2025-02\/phrases-wont-come-out-socially-aware-people-youre-so-quiet.png\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" alt=\"man talking to woman on couch\" title=\"People Who Are Highly Socially Aware Rarely Use These Thoughtless Phrases\" class=\"img-fluid\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/span> <span class=\"field field--name-field-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item\">Yuri A \/ Shutterstock<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Shy people have a lot to say once you get to know them, but you&#8217;ll probably never find out if you call them out for not jumping into\u00a0the conversation right away. &#8220;I still vividly remember being called out for not talking while doing my best to socialize with a group of people 25 years ago,&#8221; says Amy Beal of Pennsylvania. &#8220;I was horrified and spoke even less.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;More people need to realize that speaking to those who you don&#8217;t know doesn&#8217;t come easy to everyone,&#8221; says Sara Alberts of Toronto. &#8220;You only get one shot at\u00a0making a first impression. A shy person is like a book that takes a couple of chapters to get good. For instance, you might say, &#8220;I wanted to introduce you to Anne, who has a\u00a0garden\u00a0similar to yours.
