Nine times out of ten, when someone comes to me asking about a Greek charter, they\u2019ve already decided it\u2019s Mykonos or Santorini before we\u2019ve even had the first call. Fair enough, they\u2019re the names everyone knows. But I always ask if they\u2019ve done the Cyclades before, and a surprising number have, at least once, and are quietly wondering what else there is. That\u2019s usually where I bring up the Ionian. <\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n<\/div>\nSame country, same food, honestly some of the same tavernas serving the same fish. Different sea entirely though. There\u2019s no meltemi ripping through here in the afternoons the way it does around Mykonos, the water has this strange lit-from-below clarity, and the islands are actually green, pine down to the waterline, not the scorched white-and-blue most people picture.<\/p>\n
Corfu<\/h2>\n
Corfu\u2019s the one name in this list most guests already know, so I don\u2019t need to sell it much. What tends to surprise people is how much is there once the yacht\u2019s actually anchored for a few days rather than the island being a two-hour stopover on a cruise ship itinerary. The old town switches between Venetian and Georgian architecture block to block, which sounds like a small thing until you\u2019re actually walking it. Kassiopi, up on the northeast coast, has some of the better small coves in the whole region. And practically speaking, Corfu\u2019s airport handles large private jets, which matters more than people expect, and from there you\u2019re anchored off Paxos in a couple of hours.<\/p>\n
The catch is July and August. Day-trip boats out of the mainland resorts fill the same bays a charter guest would want, and it gets crowded fast. Clients chasing quiet coves, I tell them either start early, like properly early, or just move the whole trip to June or September. Light\u2019s just as good, and the bays are actually yours.<\/p>\n
Lefkas<\/h2>\n
Nobody\u2019s heard of Lefkas going in. That\u2019s sort of the point, and honestly it\u2019s turned into one of my go-to starting bases for this whole side of Greece. Geographically it sits right at the top of the southern Ionian, so a week out of Lefkas reaches Meganisi, Kalamos, up toward Kefalonia, and back, without a single long open-water crossing. Which matters more than it sounds. And the marina itself, run better than most in Greece, which you notice fast when you\u2019re trying to reprovision a superyacht in a hurry between guests.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n<\/div>\nMeganisi doesn\u2019t get talked about enough. Short hop from Lefkas, barely any development on it, and the kind of coves where you\u2019d swear, for a moment, that you\u2019d found the only empty bay left in Greece.<\/p>\n
Paxos and Antipaxos<\/h2>\n
There\u2019s one detour I push on clients even when it means rejigging the rest of the trip: Paxos, and especially Antipaxos. Paxos has the harbour side of things, Gaios mainly, shutters painted every pastel colour, tavernas lined up along the water. But Antipaxos is the one people bring up years later unprompted. Voutoumi, Vrika, that turquoise that looks fake in photos and somehow isn\u2019t. Not much to actually do there besides swim and eat for a few hours. Which, three weeks into a longer Mediterranean season, is usually exactly what a guest wants and won\u2019t admit to wanting until they\u2019re in the water.<\/p>\n

Kefalonia\u2019s the biggest island down here and still, given its size, feels barely touched by yacht traffic. Fiskardo especially, a small harbour town that came through the 1953 earthquake intact while most of the rest of the island didn\u2019t, so the old Venetian buildings are still standing there, more or less by luck. Ithaca sits right next door and carries the Homer connection, this really was meant to be Odysseus\u2019s home island, and I\u2019ve watched that land surprisingly well with families travelling with teenagers who studied the Odyssey at school and suddenly find it a lot less boring once they\u2019re looking at the actual coastline from the deck.<\/p>\n
Putting the itinerary together<\/h2>\n
Seven days out of Lefkas or Corfu gets you three, sometimes four of these islands without feeling rushed. Try doing that in the Cyclades and you\u2019ll spend half your week moving between anchorages instead of actually using them. If it\u2019s a first Ionian trip, I usually set it up as Lefkas to start, Meganisi and Kalamos in the first couple of days, then south toward Kefalonia and Ithaca. Guests coming through Corfu instead, I tack Paxos and Antipaxos onto either end depending on how the flights land.<\/p>\n
When to actually go<\/h2>\n
Here\u2019s where the Ionian pulls properly ahead of the rest of Greece, in my opinion. The meltemi, that wind that shuts down whole stretches of the Aegean for days at a time in July and August, thirty knots, sometimes more, barely touches this coast. Instead you get May through October, more or less, of steady light wind and genuinely comfortable sailing. August still gets busy, no way around that, and if quiet water matters more to your guests than peak heat I\u2019d steer them elsewhere on the calendar. But you don\u2019t get that late-season gamble you sometimes take on in the Aegean, where a charter booked for September can still get hit by a bad wind week.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n<\/div>\nOne thing worth asking before you book<\/h2>\n
Honestly, the Ionian rewards local knowledge more than people expect, because half of what makes it worth doing, the right cove on Meganisi, getting to Antipaxos before the day boats show up, doesn\u2019t show up on a template itinerary someone pulls off a website. So whoever you end up booking through, ask them straight: when did you last actually have a yacht in these waters yourself? Not five years ago. This season. A broker who\u2019s stood on the dock at Lefkas recently will know which berths are being dredged right now, which captains actually know Meganisi rather than just passing through it once, and which coves the tour boats out of Corfu haven\u2019t found their way to yet.<\/p>\n
Worth asking too whether the pricing you\u2019re being quoted came from an actual conversation with the captain about your dates, or got pulled off a listing that\u2019s sat there since spring. The Ionian fleet\u2019s smaller than the Aegean one. Availability moves fast once June hits, faster than people expect.<\/p>\n
Last thought<\/h2>\n
The Ionian was never trying to compete with the Cyclades, and I think that\u2019s exactly why it works. Fewer crowds, calmer water, a longer stretch of good weather, islands that reward a slow morning over a big night out. Guests who\u2019ve already done Mykonos and Santorini and keep asking what else Greece has by yacht- this is usually where I point them.<\/p>\n
