No one does. Not a single person.

Every one of those statements above? An excuse. A rationalization. A cop-out. If you’re buying into any of them, you’re not just lying to yourself, you’re actively sabotaging your own future.

Sure, you accept casual dating. You tolerate it. You make the best of it. You convince yourself it’s just a phase…something everyone is doing. But you don’t love it.

Let’s be real: you don’t want a casual fling, a situationship, a friends-with-benefits arrangement, a f*ck buddy, or whatever label you’re slapping on it this week. None of those are the relationship you’ve dreamed of. Not even close.

If you’re being really honest with yourself, you kind of hate it. And you should, because you want (and deserve) so much more.

Seriously…who would genuinely rather spend a month grinding through random meet-ups and awkward first dates with strangers, instead of spending that same month actually getting to know someone, someone with real potential? Literally no one. As human beings, we are wired for meaningful connection. Yet here we are, collectively pretending that “keeping things casual” is some kind of sophisticated strategy or natural order of things. I call bullshit. (It’s also social psychology…it’s easier to change our opinion “I want something casual” than it is to change our behavior. We justify our actions in all sorts of ways)

I get it, you may not feel ready for a real relationship. But notice something…even thinking that way tacitly acknowledges that you’re aspiring to something “real.” (It also suggests that casual partnerships are “fake.”)

No one enjoys the apps. Nobody likes the emotional chaos. No one wants to wonder if they’ll have something to do this weekend. We’re not built to be alone. No amount of smart-sounding explanations will change that.

Casual dating isn’t the solution. At best it’s a Band-Aid on a bullet wound. At worst, you’re wasting time and costing yourself the opportunity to find authentic connection.

We’re all looking for something real. Someone to share our lives with. Someone who makes us feel seen, heard, and understood. Someone who we can be fully ourselves with. A true friend and life partner.

You will never find that in a revolving door of low-investment situationships. That’s the harsh truth.

Here’s where most people get completely lost, and it’s not their fault.

Nobody ever told them what dating is actually for.

Here’s the most obvious question you haven’t bothered to ask yourself: What’s the point of dating?

There’s really only one: To find the real thing…a long-term fulfilling relationship.

It’s not to “have fun,” “be a distraction,” or “give me something to do on a Saturday.” That’s what friends and hobbies are for.

Dating has a unique and highly specialized purpose: Finding your person.

You need to get serious and stop messing around. The clock is ticking (for everyone).

Your choice of romantic relationship partner is the one decision you make that impacts EVERY other area of your life. Choose (very) wisely.

When you pick the wrong partner, it’s costly, both in time and in financial resources. When you get it right, life becomes easier and better.

Great partners are the short cut to a life well-lived.

Don’t believe me? If everything in your life was merely average, or even barely tolerable, but your romantic relationship was amazing, how would you feel about your life? My guess…pretty darn good. That’s the power of finding the right person to share your life with.

With the stakes so high, the dangers of treating dating casually are obvious.

Relationships are important. Time is short. You need to get it right.

Whatever you practice becomes permanent.

If you keep going on first dates, eventually you get really good at first dates. That doesn’t sound so bad, but at the same time, there’s a cost. You’re specializing in the wrong skill.

First, when you’re accustomed to dating new people, your brain expects constant novelty. The early parts of dating bring out the very best in people and you get a lot of positive attention. Your brain recalibrates and gets habituated. Now, what would have qualified as new and exciting feels boring.

You also get so good at dating that you expect the same from your partners. If someone is a little awkward, talks a bit too much, or doesn’t ask interesting questions on a first date, you quickly lose interest. You move on quickly, which feels like it saves time. But there are costs.

Whether you know it or not, you’re optimizing for quick chemistry over enduring connection. Your dopamine system is fully engaged and prompting you to constantly look for what’s next. Even when something “clicks,” it feels like just a matter of time before it starts to fizzle out and fall apart. It’s pure dopamine conditioning and a recipe for constantly moving on in pursuit of something even newer and better. (But it really doesn’t work out that way, does it?)

Second, when you normalize having new partners, you can easily bail at the first sign of trouble in a developing relationship. Instead of working through issues, you seek out a new partner. Taking the time to compromise, or find a resolution is tedious. Finding a replacement partner seems more appealing. But guess what? Every partner has flaws. If you don’t see them yet…just wait.

Third, if you have people-pleasing tendencies, you may unknowingly shift to be the person you think each partner wants. These subtle, yet frequent shifts, can create identity diffusion that makes you feel fragmented. When you’re constantly becoming someone slightly different for each person you meet, knowing who you truly are becomes challenging. You may begin to wonder, “Which version of me is the real me?”

Worst of all, your long-term relationship skills atrophy. As they say, if you don’t use it, you lose it. Your ability to be emotionally vulnerable and form deep connections withers. Relationships struggle to take root. Anticipating this, you hold yourself back. You think “don’t get too invested” because you sense the relationship will be short-lived. You don’t give much, so you don’t get much back. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy because the next thing you know, you’re right back at the beginning, starting all over again. All because you’ve been practicing dating, and not relationships.

That comes at a cost, specifically an opportunity cost. The time you spend casually dating partners who will never be “the one” steals time from building a more meaningful relationships.

You’re wasting time, and potentially missing your window.

Want the tools, frameworks, and step-by-step strategies that make the real difference between understanding something and being able to do something with it?

That’s what paid subscribers get, plus access to the full archive (everything unlocked) of science-backed scripts, exercises, and coaching frameworks from 4+ years of working with real people in real relationships.

$75/year. Less than a therapy co-pay. Infinitely more actionable.

When you’re “keeping things casual” you’re more willing to take shortcuts, to make exceptions, and ignore red flags.

Here’s what I mean: When you think a relationship is purely casual your standards are much lower. You’re optimizing for fun and excitement, and chemistry over compatibility. A partner’s lack of interest in you as a person isn’t as important. Their ability to grow with you as a person isn’t as critical. Their relationship skills (e.g., communication, support, responsiveness) aren’t really relevant. That’s going to be someone else’s problem someday. Unless it accidentally becomes your issue.

Here’s the thing: Inertia is real. People get stuck.

Every action you take builds a habit and establishes a pattern. Those can be hard to break. You slip a bit at a time and compromise your standards little by little. Until, what started very casual, has become very serious, completely by accident. That “casual fling” partner who you knew was never good enough for a long-term “real” relationship, has now accidentally become more than you ever intended.

“Just for now” relationships turn into “stuck forever” before you know it.

Time is working against you. You know that you’ve spent several months with this person and don’t want to waste that investment. So you stick around, trying to make it work, getting more and more stuck.

When you’re too casual about dating and don’t pick partners thoughtfully and intentionally, you can put your future self in a tough position.

There’s a better way to date that will set you up for the real relationship you really want.

Can dating casually evolve into something real? Sure. (As in, it’s theoretically possible…it’s just not the most likely outcome or best way to set yourself up for success.)

To be clear, I’m not suggesting that you immediately jump into dating exclusively. Rather, you should always date with long-term potential in mind. Will that always work out? Definitely not. But that’s the point. Every person you date isn’t the one, but you’ll never find the one if your approach to dating isn’t optimizing for that. When you’re falling into the trap of keeping things casual, you’re really at a disadvantage.

Instead of dating casually, you should date intentionally. Here’s how to do it:

Only date people with long-term potential. Here are two simple questions to test whether this could turn into something real:

Do I want to become more like this person? (Because that will happen…like it or not, we take on our partner’s qualities)

Would I want my kids to become more like this person? (Sometimes we tolerate a lot of heartache ourselves, but seeing it from this perspective can be a real shock to the system)

Don’t settle or compromise on your non-negotiable qualities simply because you’re “keeping it casual.” If someone lacks a “must have” characteristic, they’re not your person. They can be a good partner (for someone else), just not your partner.

When you’re getting to know someone, focus on their enduring relationship skills (e.g., communication, curiosity about you as a person, responsiveness, supportiveness, emotional intelligence, kindness, respect) instead of more superficial qualities (e.g., looks, resources).

Prioritize consistently good over occasionally amazing. Remember, trust is build on reliability and predictability.

Focus on the future. Worry less about who they are right now and more about who they’re going to be in 5, 10, 20 years. Ambition, emotional maturity, intellectual curiosity, psychological flexibility, and health all matter at lot more when you have longer timelines.

Embrace the boring. Don’t just spend time together on fun dates, also look for ways to share in everyday life. Go food-shopping together, run errands, take a long road trip. Long-term love is full of mundane moments. You should care how you both handle them together. If you can enjoy being together even when you aren’t doing anything, that’s telling.

Remember, everyone is at their best possible behavior early on. Don’t ignore early problems and red flags. They won’t magically go away. In fact, they often get much worse.

Be very clear about what you want in a relationship. Let your partner know you’re looking for something real and want to share your life with someone long-term. Yes, this will scare some people away…but only the people who wouldn’t make good long-term partners anyway. That’s a win.

To put it simply, casual dating asks, “Is this fun right now?,” while intentional dating asks, “Is this someone I could build a life with?”

Every month spent in a situationship or rotating through low-investment partners is a month you’re not spending building something real. The relationship you want won’t happen by accident. Truly fulfilling partnerships happen when you get intentional, get honest with yourself, and start dating like it matters. Because it does.

Hope this helps,
Dr. L

If you enjoyed this article, please leave a like or restack.
