They’re the ones with an airtight explanation for everything.

Also, the most confident daters aren’t the ones who struggled least. They’re the ones who were willing to question the story they’d been telling themselves about why it wasn’t working.

Dating success comes down to recognizing patterns. Yet, that’s only helpful if your interpretations are correct.

Most dating advice tells you what to do differently. This is about thinking differently, in particular the gap between how you see yourself and how you see the people you date.

If you don’t get this right, you end up stuck making the same mistakes over and over, while wondering how it keeps happening.

My Ph.D. is in Social Psychology specializing in relationships. I recently published a Social Psychology textbook, with two rockstar coauthors. Writing a textbook is fun (in a nerdy way) because you get to (re)learn an entire field.

I don’t know if you’re supposed to have favorite theories, but I definitely do. For me, the Fundamental Attribution Error (Ross, 1977) is what social psychology is all about: explaining behavior and answering the question of “why do we do what we do?”

The Fundamental Attribution Error (F.A.E.) answers that question in a very specific way by blaming others’ character for their actions while blaming the situation for our own (Ross, 1977). For example, if someone else runs a red light while driving it’s because they’re reckless. If you run the same red light, it’s because you’re in a rush.

You get the benefit of the doubt. They don’t. It’s an ego equation where your own mistakes are understandable, while others’ mistakes are character flaws. We judge others by who they are and ourselves by our circumstances. They’re flaky. We’re busy. They’re emotionally unavailable. We’re just being cautious and not oversharing.

It’s one of the most replicated findings in social psychology, and when you apply it to dating, it explains so much.

Imagine this…you go on a string of bad dates. People don’t know how to communicate anymore. Everyone’s emotionally unavailable. The apps are crushing your soul and the whole system seems rigged against you. Every bad date has a reason. Every failed connection has a culprit.

Then you meet someone great. How? Well, it’s because you were able to rise above it all. It’s because you put yourself out there. Because of your energy, your growth, your sense of humor, the work you’ve been doing on yourself.

Sound familiar? This is what I call the “Dating Attribution Error,” and it sabotages more relationships than almost any other mindset mistake.

The Dating Attribution Error is a pattern where every loss gets explained by something outside of you, and every win gets credited to something inside of you. Setbacks are due to external forces such as the apps, men/women in general, the culture, your town, your horoscope, or the current modern dating landscape. Funny thing though, when you’re successful you don’t credit the apps or modern dating. Instead, you claim successes as your own. Your “wins” are due to your charm, your looks, your personality, and your skills.

It’s a perfect system, for protecting the ego.

It’s also a terrible system for actually finding a partner.

Technically, the “Dating Attribution Error” is a hybrid of three well-established social psychological biases:

The Fundamental Attribution Error is the naming inspiration which describes how we judge others based on innate qualities around their personality or character. Your date shows up late? They’re inconsiderate. They seem distracted? They’re emotionally unavailable. They pull back? Commitment issues. We jump straight to who they are rather than considering the situation or what’s going on more generally.

Self-Serving Bias focuses on how you judge yourself (Miller & Ross, 1975). It’s our deeply human tendency to protect our self-image by taking credit for good outcomes and deflecting blame for bad ones. Things go well? You’re amazing. You get ghosted? Modern dating is broken. Either way, you protect the self. (Which also means you avoid the need to change)

The Actor-Observer Effect is where it really gets unfair (Jones & Nisbett, 1972). When you’re the one doing the behavior, you recognize the situation and how external factors have an impact. When it’s someone else, you don’t. You cancelled plans because you were exhausted. They cancelled because they’re flaky. You weren’t ready because you had a lot going on. They weren’t ready because they don’t respect your time. Same behavior, completely different interpretation, depending on who was doing it.

Alone, each bias is manageable. Together, they build an airtight case for why nothing is ever your fault.

Put these three together and you create a remarkable system for explaining all of your dating experiences. You get all the credit for the wins, and none of the blame for the losses. Failures aren’t your fault because you scapegoat the situation and/or your partner.

The worst part? Dating Attribution Errors feel smart, like you’re the only one who sees the dating world so clearly.

That’s the start of a pretty big problem.

The Dating Attribution Error isn’t just one mistake, it’s a combination that simultaneously undermines success in two different directions. One shrinks your self-awareness (avoids taking responsibility) and the other warps your judgment of others (blaming others too much).

The result is that you end up stuck. Perpetually wondering why your picker is broken, how you ended up in another situationship or dead-end relationship.

When you’re never at fault and never to blame, you don’t need to take responsibility. This gives you permission to innocently repeat the same pattern. When potential partners disappoint you or when promising relationships suddenly fall apart, you’re perpetually at a loss.

Sure, that makes you feel better, but your situation never improves.

That’s because they’re nothing you can fix, it’s all out of your control. It’s all too convenient because you’re off the hook for needing to do any self-improvement. You’re (allegedly) not the problem, so there’s nothing to fix.

You also avoid asking the tough questions: Are you coming in emotionally guarded? Do you self-sabotage when things get real? Why are you picking/tolerating these partners? Are you showing up as the partner you actually want to attract?

Until you own your part, you’re helpless to change it.

Outsourcing responsibility is incredibly disempowering.

When you’re the main character and hero of the story, you get to feel like the exception to the rule. Everyone else on the apps is superficial, picky, and flaky. You’re different.

You see the character flaws in the people you meet. They’re narcissistic, emotionally unavailable, avoidant, selfish, anxious, flaky, immature, closed off, or unreliable.

When you focus too much on other’s character, small behaviors become strong indicators of who the other person is. If they take too long to text, they’re emotionally unavailable. When they’re quiet on a first date they’re a terrible communicator. You’re prejudging everything.

Of course, you can’t be certain of your conclusions. However, that doesn’t stop you from trying and convicting people in your head, and quickly writing them off. You congratulate your incisive intuition, but never realize what you’re missing.

You’re sabotaging connection before it has a chance.

When you date defensively and expect the worst from partners,

you’re going to get the worst from partners.

If you think people are emotionally distant or avoidant, are you going to open up, be a little vulnerable, or ask questions that encourage deep connections? Nope. Why bother? At the first sign of incompatibility or misalignment, you bail. You think, “I knew it! They’re all the same.” The other person never had a chance.

If that feels fundamentally unfair and unkind, you’re right. Defensive dating leads with contempt, which is antithetical to connection. When other’s are to blame, it makes the emotional walls you put up feel logical.

While the dating attribution error is incredibly self-protective, it’s not results-oriented. You may be giving yourself too much credit, not enough responsibility, and putting all the blame on others.

You’re not blameless and your partners aren’t entirely to blame. Nothing in life is that simple. The fact is, everyone plays a role and deserves some of the blame/credit.

The fix exists. It’s just on the other side of this.

You now know what the Dating Attribution Error is, why it feels so convincing, and exactly how it’s been working against you in two directions at once.

What comes next is the part that actually changes things: a set of concrete reframes — one for each common dating scenario — that interrupt the pattern before it costs you another connection.

Subscribe to finish the article.

Source link

Do you ever feel like you’re going in circles while dating?
