Disrespect only makes sense if everyone is on the same page about what the insulting behavior actually means. That’s especially evident between generations.<\/p>\n
With various expectations based on how they grew up, not all generations agree on what counts as disrespectful behavior. This reveals some fascinating insights into the types of interactions and communication that matter to people across multiple eras.<\/p>\n
Disrespect looks different depending on your generation:<\/h2>\nBoomers think failing to adhere to traditional manners and etiquette is disrespectful<\/h3>\n
Failing to show basic manners is the epitome of disrespect to boomers. It’s considered a major offense when someone talks back or interrupts, and they’re not so willing to let it slide. There’s often a strong belief that respect should be demonstrated through behavior. To them, it’s just showing decency.<\/p>\n
Newer ideas about boundaries can also seem disrespectful because they challenge traditional expectations. Refusing to answer a phone call or declining to attend a family event might sound totally reasonable to younger generations, but boomers might see it as entitled or rude.\u00a0<\/p>\n After all, they were always taught to show up and do what needed to be done even if you didn’t feel like it. If you are unreliable or overdemanding, Gen X may decide that you’re the problem and make their exit.<\/p>\n They also have a strong distaste for hypocrisy. Say one thing and do another? Demand accountability and refuse to take any yourself? Immediately disrespectful. They have a knack for noticing inconsistencies and remembering them. So when someone cancels plans at the last minute or ignores a message for days, they usually see these actions as disrespectful. Respect is mutual, and they pay close attention to see whether things truly feel balanced.<\/p>\n Additionally, being talked down to or dismissed are things that millennials are quite sensitive about when it comes to respect. Living in a world where communication is increasingly open about well-being leads them to be a bit annoyed when someone brushes off their feelings. To this generation, respect means taking people seriously, even when you don’t agree with them.<\/p>\n Ignoring someone’s clearly stated limits or making jokes at their expense can feel like big violations for Gen Z. They’re less interested in the idea that age or status automatically mean a person deserves respect. In their minds, if you want respect, you have to be willing to give it in return.<\/p>\n Disrespect can also look like invalidating their emotions and mental health. Calling Gen Z too sensitive or insisting that they’re being overdramatic tends to feel like that person is trying to define reality for everyone else.
